BBC Radio 5 Live

Directed by Malcolm Venville
Red Bee Media with RKCR/Y&R Advertising
2013

Composition

A TV commercial for an ongoing discussion on BBC Radio 5 Live about protecting your home from intruders. This was my second collaboration with the great creative team of Mike and Jerry. This visually minimal and powerful piece was a dream to work on. It has an almost theatre-style execution and we wanted to underlay this with quite a cinematic piece, pushing different stages of tension and conflict in subtle ways. Various cues are taken from the pieces of action in the film.

This is a mostly orchestral piece, using some samples to fill out the sound with some viola and percussion played by myself. There is also heavy spacial processing and layers to create something quite 'deep' yet un-intrusive.

Just Saying

Directed by Dave Tynan
Kennedy Films LTD
2012

Currently doing the rounds is this little film/poem about Dublin.
Working on the score for this one was tricky. I had to really take in to consideration the placement of the music around the voice, as the voice is paramount to the success of the piece. I also observed a certain 'flow' with the delivery of the poem, that became almost a vocal guidetrack for the music.

The other big idea here was to avoid anything explicitly, 'irish' and I felt more inspired by the notion of a beautiful city in the dead hours of the morning and the ambiguous nature of parts of the piece, particularly the last line.

Sounds heard are piano, prepared piano, cello, viola, electronics and a sampled uilleann pipe drone.

U.K Fire Safety PSA 'On Your Child's Life'

Directed by Stevie Russell
Sonny London
2013

Composition

This is a very powerful and immediate piece for Fire Safety UK. Finding the right mood for this was crucial. The young child actor's delivery is spot-on and I was very conscious from the start of letting his tone guide us throughout.

For this score, I chose to use only a piano sound, with a long and ghostly reverb, to permeate the child's delivery with a certain amount of sensitivity. Similar to some of my other projects, I let the dialogue guide me somewhat, taking cues from the lines themselves. I spent a large deal of time finding the perfect chord progression, again airing on the side of subtlety.

For the end 'reveal', again, I wanted to just create an extremely subtle sense of unease, and for this I used a dissonant flute sound.

The Tree

Directed by David Freyne
Tilted Pictures 2012
Irish Film Board

Sound Design.

The Tree is a fantastic short film, set in my favourite kind of world .. thats right .. an apocalyptic world.

The Tree was a huge exercise in less-is-more ideology, reflective of our landscape and the isolation of our protagonist. Rather than the usual grey, cloudy and turbulent scenes painted in post apocalyptic images, The Tree paints a picture of a burnt and dry landscape with clear skies and a searing sun. The origins of the disaster are never told or suggested, but there are various elements which are included to give a sense of what happened. The rumbles and low frequency oscillations are signs of a constantly moving ground. Tectonic plate movements resulted in world-wide lava release which are still happening.

Burning reeds, dry grass and a general 'crisp' landscape are contrasted against an icy, hollow wind, caused possibly by serious shifts in climate. The wind also works to enhance the emptiness of the world.

In the film, we are mostly outside but when He enters a building to search for supplies, I wanted it to be a drastic difference to the dry, non reflective open landscape. To achieve this, I contrasted the dry external sound with a cavernous open sound. It gives the sense that this building has not been ventured into in a long time.

In the clip shown here, we cut to Him seemingly having been moving across the hills for a considerable amount of time. To emphasize the desperate nature of his journey and that he is perhaps at wit's end, I removed all sounds other than his internal breathing. This not only suggests that he is struggling to continue, but it brings the viewer straight into his desperation. It also further enhances the reveal of the tree, which he believes to have apples growing on its branches. The sighting comes as a relief, before he finally finds out that it was all a trap ...

HSE Contraception, 'Johnnys got you covered'.

Directed by Stevie Russel
Tidal 2012
Agency: Cawley Nea
Client: HSE

Composition

This series of stings, featuring the yellow-jumpsuited character known as, 'Johnny', is the new whimsical and lighthearted safe-sex campaign from the HSE.

Definitely a nod to the style popularised by Wes Anderson, the set-up left great potential for an accompanying musical score. The main thing steering this was the fact that his character was written to be playing a little guitar, so that steered me towards a wild spanish-guitar with nods to Gypsy Kings approach.

Wanting to create something that felt real and human, I played the guitar and percussion parts live myself. Myself and director Stevie, were very conscious of it not being too 'funny' and not having some sense of sexiness and fun, and ultimately it became more of a nod towards the great work of Ennio Morricone, with the yelps and cries for added effect.

These yelps and cries, added with some percussion sounds and thrills, helped enhance the character of, 'Johnny', by placing motifs on his eyebrow raising and smiles.

Triton Showers

Directed by Sean Branigan
Antidote 2012

Composition, Sound Design.

A nice and simple commercial for Triton shower heads. Whilst still retaining the usual 'sex-sells' approach, there is a whole lot more to this ad, which brought some interesting challenges with music and sound design.

We essentially are dealing with two worlds here, the real world which is hectic, noisy and stressful, and the Triton world, which is calm, quiet and peaceful. Moving from these two places in the short confined time of a commercial was not easy, but ultimately, a powerful tool was found in the slowing of the tick. This works very well with the tag line of 'Triton Time'. The sounds of the real world are naturally quite harsh and cascade and crescendo before the 'release' and 'slow-down' of entering the shower.

The shower world itself is scored with a very simple dream-like drone. This drone captures the feeling of water, the warmth of the stream and the revitalising quality of the shower.

Samsung Night Run

Directed by Mark Duggan
For Rothco
2012

Composition.

This cool document of the Samsung Night Run event in Dublin manages to capture the excitement and scale of the event on a shoe-string budget. What was supposed to be a simple run through Dublin city centre at night, became an epic rain-soaked struggle. Visually, it was a real treat, with the eye-feast of Dublin's landmarks lit by a dying sunlight, coupled with the bold lightning of landmarks such as the new convention centre as the darkness fell.

This essentially gave me great scope to take this visual into account, along with the valiant efforts of the participants and create a rather cinematic score. We begin quite ambient as the runners warm up. It is almost dream like with the drops of water falling on the lens. Pacing drums, charging processed strings, big choir chants and electronic elements, all come together to match the pulse of the runners, before opening up as the first runner crosses the finish line.
